In this post, we'll tour the freeway that takes you from Memphis to Birmingham and is part of Corridor X in the Appalachian Regional Corridor system. Let's start with the eastbound trip:
The actual beginning is in Mississippi, just south of Memphis. Plans have been made to upgrade Lamar Avenue into an Interstate-grade freeway, but are on hold for now.
Here, you can exit directly to the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile two-lane scenic road that connects Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN; in addition, part of it also goes through Alabama.
US 45 in Tupelo is a freeway that may one day be upgraded to an Interstate. One known suggestion has been for an I-57 extension into Mobile, before that was rerouted to Little Rock instead.
At the eastern end, motorists have a choice of taking I-65 north to Huntsville (via I-565), I-65 south to Montgomery or US 31.
A showcase of the highways in North America. Includes the 48 continental United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii.
