Ever since it opened, I-66 has provided a gateway from Washington, D.C. to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Here's the eastbound trip:
Passing through the first exit on I-66 east.
Dulles International Airport is one of two airports serving the nation's capital, with Ronald Reagan International being the other. Technically, Baltimore-Washington International also serves the city, although it's much closer to the Maryland port city.
I-66 meets the Capital Beltway for the only time at this complex interchange.
And so it begins: the tolled express lanes take over east of here.
Somewhere near this interchange, I-266 was supposed to diverge from its parent and cross the Potomac on its own bridge into Georgetown, a highly affluent neighborhood in the District. But major community opposition helped put an end to those plans, along with many other freeways that were planned for the city.
In a nutshell, I-266 was to meet I-66 again, using the Whitehurst Freeway, and I-66 would've continued east to its terminus at I-95. I-95 would've continued south on what is now I-395 (which came into existence during the late 1970s), and east towards an extended I-295/I-695. North of this, I-95 and I-270 (originally I-70S) were planned to use the North Central Freeway, with I-95 using the Northeast Freeway to get to its current alignment in College Park, where the University of Maryland is located. Once again, though, many of the D.C. freeways ended up being unbuilt, leaving it with a rerouted I-95 on the eastern half of the Beltway, and I-270 terminating at a wye junction in Bethesda.
