For our next virtual drive, we'll take on the original Milwaukee-Green Bay Interstate, I-43. First, we'll begin our northbound trek in Beloit, where it has been realigned for the first two miles:
I-43 once continued as WIS 81 beyond I-39/I-90, but a construction project has relocated it to a new-terrain routing. It now meets the state route at this new interchange, resuming its original alignment afterwards.
I-43 meets I-41 and I-894 here, and will later proceed north through downtown Milwaukee via a concurrency with I-94.
The first exit on I-43 after leaving I-94.
WIS 57 joins the freeway here. At one point, I-57 was supposed to be assigned to the upgraded highway, but Illinois refused to extend its portion through Chicago, so Wisconsin settled for I-43 instead.
WIS 57 splits from I-43 through thiss left exit.
Hold up, this should be I-41! And you should see why...
US 41 is now a hidden designation on the new I-41 freeway, but north of here, it reappears and continues all the way to its end in far northern Michigan.
